đ€ Demo Day or Judgment Day? Tales from the VC Trenches
by 16VC | Live pitches, near disasters, and one guy who accidentally shared his grocery list
Demo Day.
The Super Bowl of startups.
The Hunger Games of pitch decks.
The moment where you have 3 minutes to convince a room full of distracted, over-caffeinated VCs that your startup is âinevitable.â
What could go wrong?
Everything.
đ€Ą Pitch #1: The One With the Wrong Screen Share
Founder: âWeâre disrupting B2B logistics at scale.â
Us: âInteresting, go on...â
Founder: accidentally shares Spotify playlist titled âCry In The Showerâ
Listen, we love emotional vulnerability.
But maybe not as slide one.
đł Pitch #2: The Guy Who Forgot to Say What His Startup Does
Founder nailed the storytelling. Beautiful intro. Childhood trauma. Market insights. Passion in his eyes. 2 full minutes in, we were sold.
Only problem:
He never once explained what the product actually is.
Still got a term sheet. (Weâre not proud.)
đ€·ââïž Pitch #3: The Over-Prepped Robot
Founder came in like ChatGPT with a blazer.
Every line memorized. Every stat rehearsed.
No smile. No improvisation. No soul.
When asked, âWhatâs your biggest risk?â
He said, âPlease refer to slide 14.â
We did. Slide 14 was blank.
đ„ Pitch #4: The Accidental Star
This one? Chaos.
Mic kept cutting out.
One co-founder joined late.
The product demo crashed.
But the founder just⊠rolled with it.
They laughed, made a joke about Wi-Fi, and kept going like a human.
By the end, we didnât care about the bugs â we believed in the team.
(Spoiler: we invested. Theyâre killing it now.)
đŻ What Actually Works on Demo Day
Forget perfection.
Forget hype.
Weâre VCs. Weâre not impressed by polish â weâre impressed by grit, clarity, and founders who can take a curveball and still make the shot.
Hereâs the cheat sheet:

Bonus: if you crash the Zoom call and still come back charming, you get bonus points. Weâre suckers for resilience.
đĄ Final Thoughts
Demo Day isnât about being perfect.
Itâs about convincing people youâre the kind of founder who figures stuff out.
Even when your mic cuts out. Even when your co-founderâs dog throws up mid-pitch. (True story.)
So go in there, breathe deep, and pitch like itâs not judgment day.
Because if youâre good â weâll remember you.
If youâre real â weâll call you.
And if youâre lucky â weâll write the check.
